Eye on Politics - Election Week

by Auden Watts

Greetings, fellow citizens. We are currently in the midst of the 2025 Q2 general election. Before I continue any further, I want to make the following point abundantly clear: VOTE! Spread the word. Tell everyone how important voting is, because it really is an incredibly important part of our democracy. Without further ado, let's get started.

Resignation of Clementine Peach

On March 27, 2025, Vice President Clementine Peach resigned, becoming the second vice president to do so. The circumstances leading up to this event are personal and will not be revealed at this time. She appointed presidential candidate Jack Walker as her successor, and he promptly resigned as well, leaving a vacancy in the Vice Presidency.

Galileo Townsend Appointed Vice President

Mere hours after Peach's resignation, President Auden Watts appointed Galileo Townsend as Vice President. This makes him the UFA's third vice president. While his term is only provisional and will last until March 31, he has the full power of the office of the Vice Presidency. He has not performed any major executive actions as of yet.

Is it legal for the President to appoint someone as Vice President? The Constitution neither allows nor explicitly prohibits the President from appointing a citizen to the Vice Presidency in the event of a vacancy. Because the Constitution does not define procedures for the resignation of a Vice President, presidential appointment was the easiest way to fill the vacancy. However, filling government vacancies hasn't always been a priority. When Inayat Afzal, a former UFA citizen from UFS, resigned from his position as Karina's Vice President, the position remained vacant until the next electoral term.

Galileo Townsend served two terms as a Member of Congress and one partial term as Governor of Charter Arts, an office he held before being appointed Vice President. This makes him one of the most experienced UFA government officials. He is currently running for the office of Secretary of State.

Jack Walker Appointed Governor of Charter Arts

Presidential candidate Jack Walker has been appointed Governor of Charter Arts by President Auden Watts to replace Galileo Townsend. He still retains his role as Territorial Premier of Unami Creek.

Election Begins

The UFA regular election recently began with a plethora of candidates and referendums. While data about voter turnout cannot be revealed at this time, numerous citizens have mentioned voting, and there is hope that turnout will be high. The election ends at 23:59 on March 7, 2025.

"Boring Election"

Certain individuals have claimed that the UFA election is "boring" due to the low number of choices and lack of opposition in any major electoral race. While I believe voting is fun, it is easy to see how one could be bored by an election where the outcome is essentially determined from the beginning. Hopefully, more citizens will run for office in the following election, resulting in more candidates.

Well, that's all, folks! We'll be back next week with more political news.
